About Us

This role is located in the South West Region and will be managed jointly by Swim England and Swim England South West Region. Training and guidance in the first instance will be provided by Swim England.

Comprising of the counties of Cornwall Devon Dorset Gloucester Somerset and Wiltshire, Swim England South West Region is one of eight regions in England. Regions form the middle of three tiers of national, regional and county swimming governance, each with specific areas of responsibility. The Region is managed at a strategic level by a Management Board, with the day to day responsibility for the aquatic disciplines lying with its volunteer managers and committees. Swim England South West Region works in partnership with Swim England to ensure that we have compatible strategies and development plans.

The region employs a small team comprising of two full time officers and one part time officer to ensure that our clubs, athletes, coaches and volunteers are able to access the support, training and education they need to reach their full potential. We are confident that by investing in development, swimming in the South West Region will continue to improve, and that we will see more of our athletes succeeding on the national and international stage.

About The Role

We are seeking a Welfare & Governance Officer to join the South West Region on an initial 12 month contract, working 30 hours per week. The purpose of the role is to support and oversee Welfare, Governance and relevant training with the South West Region for staff and volunteers across all counties and clubs.

The role will be predominantly home based but involve some regional and national travel and there will also be the requirement to attend occasional team meetings where required. These meetings can sometimes be in the evenings or weekends.

Reporting to the Regional Chair the roles responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting and working with the National safeguarding team in accordance with Wavepower on regional welfare matters and investigations.
  • Act as an independent contact with regard to welfare matters in the region.
  • Attend safeguarding / welfare meetings, working groups as directed by line manager maintaining the strictest confidentiality at all time.
  • Champion and maintain up to date knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, guidance and legislation.
  • To lead an established Regional Club Welfare Officers forum and provide direct support and relevant communication to county and club welfare officers.

About You

In order to be shortlisted for the next stage in the process you must demonstrate within your application how you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience in a similar role
  • Experience of working with volunteers or voluntary organisations
  • Experience of Welfare and Governance in Sport, in particular at community and grassroots level
  • Experience of identifying and assessing risk in a safeguarding and welfare context and managing low level investigations
  • Proven ability in following procedures and policies
  • Knowledge of and experience of writing reports
Desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong understanding of governance and confidentiality
  • Excellent IT, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Strives to champion inclusivity, equality and best practice
  • Excellent decision making ability around risks to children and adults
  • Experience of responding appropriately to a child welfare complaint and / or disclosure, considering the circumstances, audience and situation
  • A level of experience and/or knowledge in relation to general safeguarding processes
  • Able to work well under pressure, independently and as part of a team
